Some scientists think that viruses were alive all along it's just that they are so simple. For instance, genes that regulate nutrient intake, allow breathing and locomotion, energy production, photosynthesis, or genes that allow giruses to maintain a basic level of metabolism. Other than that, some of the genes are actually characteristics of living things.

However, giruses can have more than 1,000 genes. For comparison, a human cell has around 20,000 genes, a typical bacteria have about a few thousand, while a regular virus has around 10. However, the first giant virus that was confirmed to be a virus was isolated in 1992 from a water tower in UK after a pneumonia outbreak in the area. The sample was designated 'BV-PW1', and later in 2010, it was recognized as one of those from the Cafeteria roenbergensis virus (CRoV) species.
